Beryl Cook fans unhappy at Tate policy

The Dance Class by Beryl Cook

Beryl Cook‘s friends and supporters claim that she has been “blackballed” by the modern art establishment and are demanding that one of the Tate’s four galleries finally buys one of her pictures to mark her 80th birthday last week.
In what they claim is a scandalous oversight, they say Beryl Cook , a former bed and breakfast landlady in Plymouth, has become one of Britain’s best-loved artists. The Tate’s continuing refusal to recognise her is a result of snobbery and an unhealthy obsession with conceptualism and minimalism, they claim.
Julian Spalding in the catalogue to a new West End exhibition of Cook’s latest pictures , accuses the Tate and its director, Sir Nicholas Serota, of running a cosy arts cartel that turns up its nose at Cook’s jolly ladies because they are popular and are reproduced on postcards.

The Tate has spent £22,300 on a can of x?!x by Piero Manzoni yet has never bought a painting by Cook. She’s old, she’s ill, give her a break, they say. In pulling her into the same linguistic sphere as a clever 1960s Italian artist they have however done her no favours. Beryl Cook just looks stupid when you compare her with Manzoni. Guardian comment is free article Telegraph article

Beryl Cook is one of Britain’s most talented and amusing artists .Beryl’s pictures feature women of all shapes and sizes enjoying themselves .Beryl Cook left Kendrick School in Reading at the age of 15 . She eventually married her next door neighbour from Reading, John Cook.
Beryl Cook’s husband bought her a child’s painting set for her birthday and it was with this that she produced her first significant work, a half-length portrait of a dark-skinned lady with a vacant expression and large drooping breasts. It was aptly named ‘Hangover’ by Beryl’s husband and still hangs in their house today. In 1964 Beryl Cook and her husband returned to the UK . Beryl ran a boarding house for holidaymakers on the seafront. Her paintings came to the attention of Bernard Samuels at the Plymouth Arts Centre who persuaded her to mount her first exhibition featuring 75 paintings. It was a sell out. The rest, as they say, is history.

Exhibitions at the Whitechapel and Portal Galleries in London followed . Her first book ‘The Works’ was published in 1978. Her paintings were then reproduced as greeting cards and limited edition prints and soon her work was being featured around the world, tickling ribs from Kingston to the Cape, and generating considerable popular acclaim.

Jack Vettriano has started a new career in music with Scottish band St Jude’s Infirmary . He has starred in the video of the band’s song ‘Goodbye Jack Vettriano’ which was recorded yesterday on the beach at Edinburgh. The band faithfully recreated the scene of Vettriano’s most famous image of the Singing Butler

They only intended to ask his permission to recreate some of his paintings in the shoot, but they were stunned when the elusive artist volunteered to feature in the video.
He made the offer after the band presented him with a copy of the song during a hastily arranged meeting at Edinburgh Airport last Sunday.
Drummer Mark Francis, 31, said: “He rang us up later to tell us he loved the track and also said that he would appear in the music show video. Mr Vettriano then called us later in the week to tell us that he has talked Ian Rankin into getting involved as well.
“We’re delighted that they are both coming to Porty beach. Jack wants to have ‘love’ tattooed on his knuckles – just like in the lyrics of our song.” Guitarist and cellist Ashley Campbell, 28, added: “It’s all just snowballed from when we met him at the weekend. “He had heard of our collaboration with Ian, and we put them in touch with each other for what will be a rather surreal and exciting day for us. “Jack’s agreed to recreate some of the poses from his paintings and he’s going to get Ian to do the same. “The finished video should look great. “Jack’s annoyed they didn’t take us all to Leven beach, which is the inspiration for the beaches in his paintings. I’m sure the Edinburgh Riviera will do just as nicely though.”

Beryl Cook celebrates 80th birthday

the birthday cake

The Birthday Cake by Beryl Cook special offer price £260

Beryl Cook has become the grand dame of popular art in Britain as she celebrates her 80th birthday .Beryl’s pictures feature women of all shapes and sizes enjoying themselves . Beryl started painting when her husband John bought her a child’s painting set for her birthday and it was with this that she produced her first significant work, a half-length portrait of a dark-skinned lady with a vacant expression and large drooping breasts. It was aptly named ‘Hangover’ by Beryl’s husband and still hangs in their house today. Beryl ran a boarding house for holidaymakers on the seafront.

Her paintings were then reproduced as greeting cards and limited edition prints and soon her work was being featured around the world, tickling ribs from Kingston to the Cape, and generating considerable popular acclaim.

Like fellow artist Jack Vettriano, Beryl Cook’s success has been mirrored by criticism from the art establishment . Brian Sewell of the London Evening Standard has dismissed her work , claiming she had ” developed a successful formula which a lot of fools are prepared to buy , but which is anti-art in my view . It doesn’t have the intellectual honesty of a pub sign for the Pig and Whistle . It is unworthy of any art gallery Beryl Cook continues to paint and has recently moved from Plymouth to Bristol, to be near her family

Beryl bought their young son a box of watercolours, and when showing him how to use it, she decided that she herself quite enjoyed painting. John subsequently bought her a child’s painting set for her birthday and it was with this that she produced her first significant work, a half-length portrait of a dark-skinned lady with a vacant expression and large drooping breasts. It was aptly named ‘Hangover’ by Beryl’s husband and still hangs in their house today.

Her paintings were then reproduced as greeting cards and limited edition prints and soon her work was being featured around the world, tickling ribs from Kingston to the Cape, and generating considerable popular acclaim.

This popular acclaim has been accompanied by serious critical appreciation, most notably with the inclusion of her painting in the fifth Peter Moores exhibition at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. The new Glasgow Museum of Modern Art has also recently purchased some of her original work, ensuring her a place in the annuls of British Art. Beryl Cook continues to paint and has recently moved from Plymouth to Bristol, to be near her family

Bill Botten started work as a studio boy in an advertising studio in the City of London, which means that I am entirely self taught. It also accounts for my describing my style as eclectic as, having not had any formal training, it was never suggested (happily) that I found one.

” Eclectic is the only way I can describe my pictures and paintings as I do not ascribe to any particular style of art..

I group my art under various headings , but within those groupings is a large diversity of styles and mediums.

Interactive TV adverts get results

| Wall Art Gallery | September 4, 2006

Sky Interactive TV

Results from the Sky View research panel of 20,000 satellite television subscribers in the UK indicate that 5.3 million or 69% of Sky digital households interacted with their television in the course of a month. The research suggests that the average reach for an interactive television advertising campaign is around 200,000 households across the UK, although this varies considerably by advertiser. The quality of the creative approach appears to play a large role in effectiveness, with strong video material unsurprisingly being more successful than textual presentation.
A Carlsberg campaign generated an estimated 429,000 household interactions, while Budweiser received 197,000 and a Carling commercial produced 105,000 interactions. The response rate for the Carlsberg campaign was also higher at 1.5%, compared to 0.5% for Budweiser and 0.4% for Carling. Across 10 campaigns in June 2006, the average time spent interacting was 136 seconds, although the three beer commercials significantly exceeded this at 258, 236 and 209 seconds respectively. It seems that the brands attracted different individuals to interact, with only a 9% overlap between households interacting with both the Carlsberg and the Budweiser commercial.
“Interactive TV has been incredibly successful for our Carlsberg Old Lions Campaign,” said Chris Lewis, marketing controller at Carlsberg in an enthusiastic testimonial. He said that the second-by-second click through measurement enabled by the Sky View panel will only help strengthen the medium and make it even more accountable. This case study represents the first large-scale comparative research published on the effectiveness of interactive television advertising
