Photogold featured artist – Suzan Wolters

| Art news, Featured, Wall Art Gallery | November 12, 2008

Magic Moment
Suzan Wolters .Suzan is a full time artist and has been for the past 25 years.
Suzan:”My love for working in clay is one of my most vivid childhood memories, I have been growing up with paint and clay, it was almost inevitable that I was being drawn to dedicate my live sculpting and painting. From my early twenties up to now I have been sculpting and painting, at first reproductions of antique dolls in porcelain, after that I sculpted infants in polymer clay and later my well known and recognizable happy plus-size woman in their full form.
I have always been enchanted with sculpts and paintings of big woman, in particulair happy ones, they are often so much more buoyant and graceful than thinner woman”.

Suzan received for her sculptings several prestigious prices at International art shows in New York. Her sculptings are collectible items in Japan, the USA, Australia, Russia and Europe.

“A few years ago my mother moved to a new house and asked me to paint her a big happy woman, I thought that would be a fun thing to do and a passion emerged….I was hooked!
Every time I am working on a painting I get ‘bewitched’ in putting together a voluptuous confident and happy female,it is a very fulfilling and gratifying experience.
I work mainly from live models, beautiful plus size woman with a positive image of themselves.

A ‘feel good’ mood and a smile is what Suzan is hoping for when people view her work.

Suzan Wolters admits to being a big fan of Beryl Cook

Jack Vettriano refuses to paint Colin Montgomerie for NPG

| Art news, Featured, Jack Vettriano blog | October 29, 2008

Jack Vettriano has revealed he turned down the chance to produce a painting for the National Galleries of Scotland – because they asked for a portrait of golfer Colin Montgomerie .

He said: “I was in France when I got a call from my art dealer, who said there might have been a breakthrough. ‘The national galleries would like you to do a portrait’. I said, ‘Who?’. ‘Colin Montgomerie’.

“I said, ‘I’m afraid that the answer is no’, I don’t do men with breasts, and I don’t mean that as unkind to Colin Montgomerie (sic) . My art dealer said, ‘Think about it’ and I said, ‘I have, and the answer is no’.”

Later in the evening at the event, An Audience with Jack Vettriano, the artist was asked if he would ever paint a man as anything other than a prop for women. He replied: “I have to paint a face I like. Have you seen Colin Montgomerie’s face recently?”

However, gallery chiefs denied knowledge of any approach being made and insisted the NGS had not commissioned a portrait of the golfer.

Vettriano has had a long-running feud with the arts establishment and he has never had any of his work in a major gallery

Jack Vettriano painting of Zara Phillips goes on sale at auction

| art blogs, Art news, Featured, Jack Vettriano blog | October 21, 2008

Jack Vettriano’s painting of Zara Phillips for Sports relief with her reclining on a Union flag is up for auction. It is predicted to defy the credit crunch and fetch a stunning £1 million.
“We hope people will start bidding from £100,000,” says a spokesman for Bonhams, which is conducting the auction in aid of Sport Relief. “It’s a very rare piece and the only one of a young royal around that is up for auction. We would love it to hit the million mark and certainly think it is a possibility.”
“I was shaking and she had to calm me down before we started,” says Vettriano. “It was always going to be a more natural rather than a formal portrait.”
The Fife-born artist’s paintings now sell at high prices. Whether this work can beat his previous record of £744,800, for the The Singing Butler in 2004 remains to be seen.

Falkirk Mod 2008

| Art news | October 14, 2008

The National Mod 2008 has started this week in Falkirk . The Mod is a Gaelic festival of traditional music with a prestigious gold medal for the best in each category . To some ‘The Mod is coming home’ might seem a curious slogan to use as the Mod has never been held in Falkirk before however the slogan arises from the annual Trysts that were held in Falkirk over the centuries where drovers and cattle dealers from all over the Highlands and Islands would converge on the town to buy and sell their livestock. The Mod is Coming Home because the whole concept of the Highland Gathering had originated in Falkirk. The local organising commmittee for the Falkirk Mod 2008 has officially launched the Mod Fringe – a series of musical and cultural events (many of which are free) that will appeal to the local community and the estimated 10,000 visitors expected to attend the event between 10th and 18th October this year. Some of the musical highlights include: Live music from bands such as Skerryvore; The Red Hot Chilli Pipers; Skipinnish and many others across a number of venues in the town, A Fiddlers Rally at Falkirk Town Hall, Ceilidhs featuring established and local musicians, Pipebands and live musical performances in the town centre. Photogold has teamed up with Scottish screensavers to produce a special edition screensaver for the Falkirk Mod 2008 . Visit Scottish Screensavers for the Falkirk Mod screensaver

Banksy says 200 fakes have been sold

| Art news, banksy news | September 29, 2008

Artist Banksy has issued a statement that over 200 art works supposedly by him are in fact fakes .Pest Control, the association set up by Banksy, said 89 street pieces and 137 screen prints have been falsely attributed to him. Pest Control does not authenticate street pieces because Banksy prefers street work to remain in situ and building owners tend to become irate when their doors go missing because of a stencil. Banksy has a casual attitude to copyright and encourages the reproduction of his work for your own personal amusement, so it’s with regret that he finds himself having to deem pieces either ‘real’ or ‘fake’. He would encourage anyone wanting to purchase one of his images to do so with extreme caution, but does point out that many copies are superior in quality to the originals.

A new auction of work by Banksy takes place tomorrow . The artist has not authenticated the pieces but the auctioneers, Lyon & Turnbull, insist that they are genuine.

They include Refuse Rat, which is expected to fetch £20,000, and Fungle Junk (£150,000), consisting of three panels painted on to the side of a trailer at a festival in Cornwall in 1999.

A spokesman for the auctioneers said: “Banksy hasn’t said they are fake.
I don’t know why he’s not authenticated them…

Damien Hirst sale beats the credit crunch

| Art news, Wall Art Gallery | September 16, 2008

Damien Hirst’s new auction of art works has broken all the estimates to bring in a record total of £70.5m ($125m), with still more works for sale.Hirst has proved that the credit crunch has had no effect at the top end of the art market . His auction has caused a feeding frenzy amongst dealers and collectors .
The British artist has used the auction house Sotheby’s instead of the traditional art dealer.
It is the first time an artist has sold a substantial body of work this way.
Sotheby’s say the sale has set a new record for a sale dedicated to one artist.
The works for sale include The Golden Calf - a bull in a tank of formaldehyde, with its head crowned by a gold disc – which sold for £9.2m ($16.5m).

The extraordinary body of new work to be showcased at Sotheby’s is among his best yet.The Kingdom – a tiger shark also in formaldehyde - which sold for £9.6m ($17.2m). It had been estimated at about half that price.
The Black Sheep with the Golden Horn, another animal in formaldehyde, sold for £2.6m, within its £2-3m estimate.
The auction, entitled Beautiful Inside My Head Forever, was the first of three that will sell a total of 223 art works by Mr Hirst.
The second and third sessions are due to take place on Tuesday.
Mr Hirst has called the auction a “mini retrospective” and “probably the most amazing show I’ve put on”.
It has been called a landmark sale , but that the artist says galleries can be snobby and elitist.
A spokesman for the auction house Sotheby’s said: “The extraordinary body of new work to be showcased at Sotheby’s is among his best yet – ambitious, exquisite and incredibly powerful.”
