In 2004 Jack Vettriano’s painting of The Singing Butler set a record price for a Scottish painting. It sold for £744,500. Samuel Peploe’s Still Life with Coffee Pot might beat this record at auction in May. Auctioneer Christie’s have put an estimate of £1.2 million on the work. It is described as a rare early work by Peploe , the most famous Scottish Colourist . Four other paintings by Peploe will also be in the auction. The Singing Butler is Vettriano’s most famous and successful image . It has been published as a poster and a canvas print

Sotheby’s Scottish Art auction takes place in London on Wednesday, September 30, 2009 and it will bring to the market more than 150 works from many of the leading names in the field of predominantly 20th Century Scottish Art. The Scottish Colourists will feature strongly, as will Anne Redpath, Joan Eardley, Peter Howson and Jack Vettriano and the sale is estimated to bring in the region of £4 million. All of the sale’s offerings will be exhibited at Edinburgh’s Mansfield Traquair between Tuesday, September 15 and Thursday, September 17 and this exhibition is open to the public. Jack Vettriano will be represented by some 15 works, the most valuable of which is Bathers, which was exhibited at The Solstice Gallery in Edinburgh in August 1991 in the very same exhibition as two of the artist’s most iconic images, The Singing Butler and Mad Dogs. Bathers dates to the most significant period of Vettriano’s career and is expected to fetch £100,000-150,000. Pincer Movement , which has been published as a limited edition print , is also for sale. New Jack Vettriano auction

August is the month when the attention of the UK art market starts to turn towards Scotland, to Scottish art auctions and the Edinburgh Art Festival. For the first time in over 4o years, Sotheby’s will not be holding its regular sale of Scottish at the five-star Gleneagles Hotel in Perthshire.
However , Sotheby’s is previewing its next Scottish art sale in Edinburgh in mid-September, before a London auction later in the month. For this it has managed to gather an impressive array of Scottish Colourists, including 10 works by the painter Jack Vettriano

Not Just Another Day for hospital

Painter Jack Vettriano has donated one of his works Just Another Day – a portrait of a woman with Battersea Power Station in the background, which will go under the hammer as part of a drive to raise £100,000 for the Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability. Other artists who have given pieces to the auction include Royal Academicians Ken Howard, Mick Rooney and Eileen Cooper.

The auction and a champagne party will take place on Thursday 9 October at the hospital
