In less than ten years, Jack Vettriano has emerged from obscurity to become Britain's foremost contemporary narrative painter despite having never received any formal art school training. Born in Scotland in 1954, Vettriano left school at sixteen to become a mining engineer in the local coalfields. For his twenty- first birthday, a girlfriend gave him a set of watercolour paints and, from then on, he spent much of his spare time teaching himself to paint. The local art gallery, The Kirkcaldy Museum and Art Gallery, with its renowned collection of 19th and 20th century Scottish paintings, was particularly inspirational. It was fourteen years before Vettriano felt ready to show any of his work in public. In 1989 he offered two works to the Royal Scottish Academy's annual exhibition ; both were accepted and sold on the first day.The following year, an equally enthusiastic reaction greeted the three paintings, which he entered for the prestigious Summer Exhibition at London's Royal Academy. In the last nine years, interest in, and desire for his work, has grown rapidly. There have been sell-out solo exhibitions in Edinburgh, London, Hong Kong and Johannesburg. In November 1999, Vettriano's work was shown for the first time in New York, when twenty paintings were displayed at The International 20th Century Arts Fair at The Armory. Fifty collectors from the UK flew out for the opening night of the Fair and all twenty paintings were sold out within an hour of the opening. In March 2000, BBC Scotland produced a half-hour documentary about Vettriano for their Arts Series EX-S; aired initially in Scotland only, the documentary is likely to be aired UK-wide later this year. Vettriano's last major exhibition, Lovers and Other Strangers, was at the Portland Gallery in London in June 2000. After its London run, the exhibition transferred on loan to The Kirkcaldy Museum & Art Gallery in Fife. Attendance figures indicated that more people visited the Museum during the Vettriano exhibition than had done so in the whole of the previous year. A book about the artist was published to coincide with this exhibition. Published by Pavilion Books, Lovers and Other Strangers features over 100 paintings selected from the work of the last ten years and biographical text by Anthony Quinn. In 2010 the new Vettriano exhibition , Days of Wine and Roses , started in Kirkcaldy before transferring to London and Milan. Jack Vettriano revealed he dislocated his shoulder a few years ago and it’s been troubling him as it's on his painting side. “There are some things I was able to do with a paint brush that I can’t now. If I try it, a muscle cramps in my upper arm. So I’ve not been painting. My exhibitions have been cancelled until next year. Anybody that tells you life gets easier as you get older is having you on." In 2001, Vettriano donated a painting to a charity auction at Sotheby's in aid of Help the Hospices. The painting, Beautiful Dreamer, was the second highest bid for Lot, making £25,000. UK Portland Gallery exhibited twenty- one paintings at artLONDON, an annual contemporary art fair, in May 2002. All twenty-one paintings were sold within the first hour of the opening night. Aside from his exhibitions, Vettriano has acquired a vast following through the posters and prints of his paintings that are distributed worldwide. This year the two best selling art posters in Britain The Singing Butler are both Vettriano images. To date, more than 1,000,000 posters of Vettriano's paintings have sold worldwide A University spokesperson said, "It is a privilege for the University to honour one of Scotland's leading contemporary artists and a particular pleasure to do so because of the amount of time which Jack Vettriano has invested in helping the University's students fulfil some of their own artistic aspirations." The Jack Vettriano exhibition at the Fife gallery which inspired him has been delayed until 2022. It has now been re-scheduled for June 2022. The exhibition, Jack Vettriano: The Early Years, will include nearly a dozen paintings produced in his formative years before he decided to become a full-time artist, and are signed with his birth name. It will showcase paintings created from in his 20s until he moved to London in 2000, and give his fans a fresh insight into his early years, with many of his works on loan from private collectors. One of the paintings which will be on show for the first time in many years is The Critical Hour of 3am – a work Vettriano describes as capturing the moment that he grappled with the decision to give up his previous life and work to devote himself full time to painting.

Eilean Donan Castle
Eilean Donan Castle prints

Eilean Donan means Island of Donan (a religious figure from the 12th century). Eilean Donan was Clan MacKenzie's most important stronghold from the 13th Century until it was destroyed in 1719. Robert the Bruce was given refuge in Eilean Donan Castle by John MacKenzie, Second of Kintail when he was being hunted by the English at the beginning of the fourteenth century. Above the entrance to the castle there is a Gaelic inscription which translates as: As long as there is a MacRae inside, there will never be a Fraser outside. Inside the courtyard is the famous Murchison Stone with an inscription about John Murchison of Auchtertyre who was killed in the Battle of Sherrifmuir in 1715. In the upper floor inside the castle there are six bedrooms named Loch Alsh,Loch Long, Eilean Donan, Ballimore, Loch Duich and Conchra. There is also a panel with the names of the constables ( guardians ) of the castle carved on it. Eilean Donan Castle was originally built in 1220 and owned by the MacKenzies of Kintail. The MacRae Clan who settled in the area came from the Beauly Firth where they had protected the Clan Fraser. They acted as bodyguards to the MacKenzie chiefs. Although there was a number of disputes, the MacKenzies held Eilean Donan right up until until the 16th century. The MacRaes first became Constables of the Castle in 1511 with a lot of control over the surrounding area. A feud between the MacKenzies and the McLeods of Dunvegan, over the disputed claims of Donald Gorm MacDonald to the title of Lord of the Isles, came to a head when he attacked the Castle with 50 galleys. He was shot and killed by Duncan MacRae with a single arrow. The Castle was garrisoned by Government troops but later retaken by the Jacobites before the Battle of Sheriffmuir. In 1719 it was held by Spanish Jacobites. Three English frigates sailed into Loch Duich and bombarded the castle with cannon fire until it was in ruins. The castle them lay in ruins for nearly 200 years. In 1911 John MacRae-Gilstrap bought the castle and start work to restore the castle over a period of twenty years at a total cost of a quarter of a million pounds. Local materials were used wherever possible. More recently the castle featured in an episode of the Avengers ( the sixties TV series , not the science fiction blockbuster ) , in which Joanna Lumley made her debut as Purdy . The castle was a location for the film Highlander and the James Bond movie the World is not Enough. Eilean Donan Castle is on an island in the middle of 3 lochs - Loch Alsh, Loch Long and Loch Duich - and surrounded by the mountains of the Highlands. If you climb the hill overlooking the castle you can see the Isle of Skye. The castle is next to the village of Dornie and about 10 miles from the Kyle of Lochalsh and the bridge to the Isle of Skye to the North. The castle is on the west coast of Scotland, about 90 miles north of Glencoe and about 180 miles from Edinburgh. You can take the train from Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh and take a taxi to the castle. There is a bus route from Glasgow past the castle once a day. There are many bus tours from Edinburgh to the castle. Due to a change in Scots law it is possible to get married in a Scottish castle. The castle is open most of the year and it is run by the Conchra Charitable Trust.

Online since 1998

The origins of Photogold go back to 1998 when I bought a Macintosh Performa computer which came with Claris Home Page , an early html editor. I then bought the domain name Photogold.co.uk in September 1998 as an experiment more than anything else . After some early success selling Jack Vettriano posters from the website , I decided to focus on Jack Vettriano prints due to the huge popularity of images like the Singing Butler , Bluebird at Bonneville and Dance me to the end of Love . Vettriano’s limited edition prints are also very popular with his biggest fans . Photogold is now over 20 years old and actually older than internet giant Google ( established 2 months after Photogold ) Falkirk Bairns
