Jack Vettriano was born in St Andrews , Fife, Scotland in 1951 and grew up in the mining town of Methil . He was raised in poverty – he lived with his mother, father and older brother in a spartan miner’s house, sharing a bed with his brother and wearing hand-me-down clothes. From the age of 10, his father sent him out delivering papers and milk, cleaning windows and picking potatoes — any job that would earn money. His father took half his earnings. After leaving school at 15, he followed his father down the mine, working as an apprentice engineer. Vettriano took up painting as a hobby in the 1970s when a girlfriend bought him a set of watercolours for his birthday and from then on, he spent much of his spare time teaching himself to paint.

His earliest paintings, under his birth name “Jack Hoggan”, were copies of  paintings; his first painting was a copy of  Poppy Fields by Monet .  He studied paintings at the art gallery in Kirkcaldy . In 1984, Vettriano first submitted his work to an art exhibition in the museum .

In 1987, when he was 36, Vettriano left his wife Gail . He quit his job in educational research, and moved to Edinburgh .  He applied to study Fine Art at Edinburgh University but his portfolio was rejected.

Early on Vettriano decided to mark a break with his past work which had been sold under his family name Hoggan. He adopted his mother’s maiden name. The turning point came in 1988 when he submitted two paintings to the Royal Scottish Academy’s Annual Exhibition; both were sold on the first day and Vettriano was approached by several galleries. He held his first solo exhibition at the Edinburgh Gallery in 1992 entitled ‘Tales of Love and Other Stories’ and later that year, he exhibited at the Mall Galleries in London.

He was represented by Portland Gallery from 1994-2007 and during this time, he had many sell-out solo exhibitions in Edinburgh, London, Hong Kong and New York . Jack Nicholson, Sir Alex Ferguson , Sir Terence Conran and Sir Tim Rice are amongst his collectors.
