Game On by Jack Vettriano limited Edition Giclee Print signed and numbered in pencil by artist Jack Vettriano . Hahnemuhle mould made paper Published in April 2006 Edition Size: 495
Jack Vettriano faced controversy last year when it was revealed that some of the figures and poses in his paintings , including the Singing Butler , appeared to have been an exact copy of pictures in a £20 Illustrator’s Figure Reference Manual, a DIY art book published in 1987.
Vettriano’s intimate portrait of a half-dressed woman preparing to leave her lover after a tryst is titled A Very Married Woman. She certainly is. The brunette portrayed in the painting is thought to be the artist’s married mistress.Margaret Deas, 32, appears in three of his new works, all apparently inspired by their relationship.
She met the 54-year-old Scottish artist through her work as a local newspaper reporter in Fife.
“I didn’t know anything was going on,” husband Paul Deas said . “Then she told me she had something to tell me.”
He said eight weeks after they split up, his wife dropped the bombshell that she was having an affair with Vettriano. But Mr Deas is convinced the relationship began in secret before their marriage ended.
His wife has since quit her job with a weekly newspaper, telling colleagues she is moving in with Vettriano at his beachfront apartment in the south of France.
Mrs Deas can be seen in an exhibition of the painter’s work called Love, Devotion And Surrender at Kirkcaldy Art Gallery. As well as A Very Married Woman, which shows a man resembling Vettriano holding his head in despair as his mistress puts her hair up, Her Secret Life shows a woman with a striking resemblance to Mrs Deas making a hushed telephone call from a payphone. His Beautiful Girl also features an image of a woman from the back which is similar to these panitings .
The third picture, titled A Long Time Gone, shows a couple embracing passionately in the shadow of Methil power station. Vettriano said recently: “The model is called Maggie. She’s the muse for most of the paintings in my new show. Maggie and I are friends.”
Mrs Deas has recently been seen driving around the area in his £35,000 Audi TT.
“It’s painful to think that these paintings could have been done while we were together and that he is exhibiting them a few miles away. I hope Maggie isn’t left high and dry by him.”
Vettriano has admitted to being obsessed with sex. Divorced at 26, he has vowed never to marry again.
His last girlfriend was PR executive Tracey Clinton, who posed for one of his most erotic works, Along Came A Spider, which was bought by football supremo Alex Ferguson for £130,000.
“I’m not an attractive guy, but fame bestows something of that on you. If you take a man who’s spent his life working for other people and suddenly he’s got a bit of money and is his own boss, of course he’s going to misbehave.”
Sexual tension is one of the recognised hallmarks of his art, along with a distinct sense of danger and seedy nightlife.
In the 1990s, he took hundreds of pictures of prostitutes in Edinburgh who inspired the vampish sirens in a series of paintings. In return, he gave several works to the then owner of the premises. They are now worth in excess of £500,000.
